General Surgery Residency Application Information

The general surgery residency program at the University of Mississippi Medical Center is a fully-accredited ACGME five-year program. We offer a strong, balanced program with the flexibility to support multiple surgical career tracks. The program uses the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS). Students should check with their Dean's office if unfamiliar with this service.

As part of the ERAS application, the residency program requires a recent photograph, an official transcript, USMLE Step 1 results, a dean's letter (Medical Student Performance Evaluation-MSPE), and three letters of recommendation from faculty. At least two of these faculty letters should come from surgeons, but a Surgery Department chairman's letter is not required.

USMLE Step 1 results are also required, with a first attempt minimum score of 220, and USMLE Step 2 results should be provided as soon as they become available to the applicant. In addition, IMG's will need one year of clinical experience in the United States to be considered for a categorical position and all applicants must have graduated from medical school within the last five years.

Six categorical and five preliminary candidates are chosen annually. Each Preliminary position is for one year only. Pre-screening of ERAS applications begins in early September. Competitive applicants will be invited to visit UMMC for interviews. During the interview day, there will be presentations by the departmental chair and the program director, a tour of the medical center, interviews with faculty and opportunities to speak informally with residents and faculty. Interviews are held on select Wednesdays in November, December and January. An informal dinner with residents is held on the Tuesday evening prior to each Wednesday interview date.

Selection of applicants for NRMP ranking is based upon academic records, recommendation letters and interviews without regard to race, ethnicity, religion, gender, marital or veteran status, age or disability. An applicant without United States citizenship must have either a J-1 only visa or Permanent Resident status (Green Card) in order to be employed as a resident at the University of Mississippi Medical Center.
